[HIGH FIVE] We gave a High Five to Mason Slack, a Coach at GRIP Fitness for Longevity in Austin, TX.

WellcommATX: Where do you work…out?

Mason Slack: I coach and workout at GRIP Fitness for Longevity! We are located right off South Congress in the heart of ATX, owned by the incredible Paige Tejara, and programmed by Ben Flores! We are a functional fitness space with an incredible community. The programming has a very balanced approach to fitness, strategic strength cycles, and challenging conditioning pieces. The overall goal is giving our members the tools and resources to live as healthy as possible. We also offer recovery options and an onsite PT from the awesome Victoria Loving!

WATX: What does “wellness” mean to you?

MS: Wellness is about feeling good and confident in your mind and body. It’s moving regularly—not for the sake of burning calories, but for that post-workout high over the beer afterward, the laughing during a group class, and the sweat angels on the mat. It’s about finding small ways to feel grounded in the groove of everyday life. I think wellness looks different for everyone, and I’m always figuring out what it means for me. Right now, it’s showing up for myself, staying active, doing things that keep me mentally clear, and bringing others along with me. I love watching people grow and accomplish goals, whether big or small. Wellness is not about being perfect (sorry, Instagram Athletes).

WATX: What are your wellness goals over the next twelve months?

MS: This year, I want to remain consistent while focusing more on incorporating recovery. Life is short! So I want to be able to enjoy every bit of it. That may mean a rest day here and there or that today’s workout is walking my dog, Goose, around Town Lake. What a privilege it is to move and be around friends while doing it. I did catch the marathon bug watching my rockstar friends Anastasia Megdanis, John Hofmeister, Carlos Suarez, Rachel Blanton, and Jessie Turney run, so I am potentailly signing up this year! No promises.

WATX: Who are some people who inspire you, motivate you, or keep you accountable when it comes to your wellness?

MS: I’d have to say first and foremost the wonderful coaches and owner at GRIP with whom I have the privilege to work and workout. Paige, you’ve given me the opportunity to do something I am passionate about in coaching classes. Ben, you’ve really added to my understanding of fitness and the why behind everything we do. Sarah [Hobbs], you’re an extremely talented athlete and coach and an even better friend. Second would have to be the entire community at GRIP. Y’all are the reason I show up. I love the energy and the space y’all are helping us build. Keep dancing mid workout: the music is good.

WATX: What advice would you share with someone looking to change their wellness routine?

MS: The hardest part is just getting started! Don’t let intimidation hold you back—if a gym or space makes you feel uncomfortable, it’s probably not the right fit for you anyway. Find an environment that motivates and supports you. Most importantly, bring a “can do” attitude and don’t be your own biggest obstacle. You’ve got this!
