[HIGH FIVE] We gave a High Five to Kaelyn Miller, an ACE CPT and Instructor at Urban Lagree in Austin, TX.

WellcommATX: Where do you work…out?

Kaelyn Miller: I really try to practice what I preach. I take class at Urban five days a week. Lagree truly is my favorite workout because it’s both mental and physical. You really have to focus to get through each exercise, and there are endless challenges. While Lagree may become more comprehendible with each class, if you are pushing yourself to sweat and shake, it’s never easy. If I can’t make it into the studio, you’ll find me running around Lady Bird Lake or dropping into Gold’s Gym to lift weights.

WATX: What does wellness mean to you?

KM: To me, wellness is about finding balance for both your body and mind. The two are so interconnected, if one is out of balance, the other usually is, too. Life moves in seasons, and it’s always important to honor your mind and body in whatever season you’re in.

WATX: What are your wellness goals over the next twelve months?

KM: Over the next twelve months, I want to fall in love with a new challenge. One I’d love to take on is a HYROX competition: it’s way outside of my comfort zone, but that’s where growth happens.

WATX: Who are some people who inspire you, motivate you, or keep you accountable when it comes to your wellness?

KM: I feel like my own wellness is deeply connected to how I teach my classes. I’m all about form, fit, and function. A couple of people who really inspire me are Ideen Chelengar and Kelly Matthews, who was my coach when I was using the Ladder app. Kelly and Ideen are both incredibly knowledgeable, and I’ve learned so much from them about strength training that I’ve been able to apply to my own workouts as well as my classes. Big shoutout to the Urban team, as well. Lagree is an amazing method, but it wouldn’t be what it is without incredible instructors and a solid community.

WATX: What advice would you share with someone looking to change their wellness routine?

KM: If someone is looking to change their wellness routine, I have a couple of pieces of advice. First, start small. It’s a lot harder to figure out what works for you if you’re trying to change everything all at once. Change one thing at a time, practice consistency, and build from there. Second, find movement you actually enjoy. We build discipline by showing up for ourselves over and over again, but it’s much harder to stay consistent if your workouts feel like punishment instead of something you look forward to. Lastly, there’s a ton of misinformation online when it comes to health and wellness. Save yourself time and energy by skipping the BS. Keep it simple, and stick to what’s science-backed.
