[HIGH FIVE] We gave a High Five to Mariah Swanson, a Certified Pilates and yoga instructor weaving in energetic healing into every class in Austin, TX.

WellcommATX: Where do you work…out?

Mariah Swanson: I teach mat and reformer at Ritual Moves and occasionally sub yoga at Open Form. Outside of all of this, I am certified Reiki Master and incorporate Reiki elements into several of my classes.

WATX: What does wellness mean to you?

MS: Wellness is holistic: mind, body, spirit, energetic body, and more. Our body and spirit are information for us to lean into and get curious about so that we can find the wellness tools that work for us and serve us.

WATX: What are your wellness goals over the next twelve months?

MS: My wellness goals over the next twelve months include spending less time on my phone, sprinting more, lifting more weights, and practicing more kundalini yoga.

WATX: Who are some people who inspire you, motivate you, or keep you accountable when it comes to your wellness?

MS: There are so many people to choose from, so I’ll keep it simple: my sister, Kelsey Erickson, Kelsey’s husband, Dane Erickson, and my late grandfather, Richard “Swanie” Swanson. Kelsey is a life coach and always has the right motivation to get you going. Dane is an excellent personal trainer and hockey coach. Dane has shown me a lot of the fundamentals of strength training over the years. He also taught me about “dead bugs,” which helped heal my low back pain! My grandfather, Swanie, was always on the move finding the latest wellness trend. He spent his 50th birthday walking 50 miles. He was always curious enough to explore the limits of the human body, and it was very inspiring!

WATX: What advice would you share with someone looking to change their wellness routine?

MS: I’d recommend getting curious and tuning into what your body is telling you, rather than what you see others doing on Instagram. Keep asking yourself “Why?” Take some deep breaths and welcome in patience.
