[HIGH FIVE] We gave a High Five to Sergio Almaraz, Founder of Power Surge Fitness, a fitness community where he provides 1-on-1 personal training as well as online coaching through his app. He is also an Instructor at Barry's Navy Yard in Washington, DC and a Coach at F45 in Silver Spring, MD.

Wellcomm: Where do you workout?

Sergio Almaraz: You can typically catch me working out in The Red Room at Barry's. It's the perfect combination of lifting weights to promote muscle growth, running/jogging/sprinting intervals to improve your endurance, and hearing fire music and beat drops to keep you locked in. Outside of that, you can catch me at Elevate Interval Fitness in Columbia Heights training for my next Hyrox Race. They are truly the best gym in the city to help you get Hyrox ready. I also love to strength train by myself at Definition of Fitness in Downtown DC. This is also the gym where I train my clients!

WC: What does wellness mean to you?

SA: Wellness to me is about striving for every aspect of your health to be the best it can be. It also means being in tune with what your body needs and when it needs it. Most people think about the physical aspect, but that's only one piece of the puzzle. It also means honoring your mental health, taking pauses for your emotional health, and being strong and vulnerable enough to reach out to friends or someone new.

WC: What are your wellness goals over the next twelve months?

SA: My wellness goals over the next twelve months are to continue strengthening my body to live a long and healthy life, to build upon my athletic performance for future Hyrox races, and to take more time to pour into myself mentally and emotionally so that I can also pour into others.

WC: Who are some people who inspire you, motivate you, or keep you accountable when it comes to your wellness?

SA: My parents (Martha and Ramiro) are my greatest motivators. They both immigrated from Bolivia, barely knew any English, and started a whole new life completely by themselves before they found each other. I was born into the privileges that they worked hard for. I know that if they could do that, I can do anything I set my mind to. Their unconditional love and support are my rock in life. Another rock is my fiancée, Hannah. We love each other so much and always strive to prioritize our health, nutrition, and overall wellness for this beautiful future we're creating together.

WC: What advice would you share with someone looking to change their wellness routine?

SA: You know what you deserve. Build a strong why behind it. This journey will frequently take you outside of your comfort zone, but in those uncomfortable moments, you find your true strength to keep moving forward. When you get there, it's truly beautiful. You got this, and I believe in you!

How do we pick our Hit Events? They’re curated exclusively for our WellcommATX Community from former High Fives. Each week, we’ll highlight one standout fitness event in the WellcommATX email. This could be:

  • a group workout

  • a pop-up fitness event

  • a race or charity run

  • a pickleball tournament

  • a cycling ride

  • a recovery event or

  • anything else fitness-related

These events will be shared with all Wellcomm email subscribers, but submissions from former High Fives who are subscribers are prioritized, ideally for events they’re organizing, leading, or personally involved with.

We’ll feature one event per week, so spots are limited. We’re grateful for everything our High Fives do for our fitness community and are excited to share these exclusive ongoing updates from the best of Austin!

That’s this week’s edition of WellcommATX. Like what you read? Get On The List and get future editions sent directly to your inbox. Have a friend who needs to read Wellcomm? Forward our email to them or tag them on our IG. Until next time, take care of yourself, and take care of each other.
